Rezumat

A democratic society is characterized by the presence of a set of values, assumed by the whole society. These values are usually naturally passed down between generations, being part of a nation’s cultural traditions. In the case of the imposition of foreign ideologies, by violent means, especially, as happened in Europe of the 20th century, there is an interruption of that natural process. Then, to restore that historical memory of the people, some special strategies are needed, at the state level, so that people know their true identity, true history, heroes and values. During decades or even hundreds of years, totalitarian regimes (the most ferocious communist one) tried to destroy the memory of some peoples in Eastern Europe, an eloquent example being Bessarabia, the current Republic of Moldova. This fact led to the loss of national identity, the decrease in the level of culture, having an influence on the geopolitical factor and finally, the economy. The revival of national memory can favor the assumption of democratic values and the orientation of citizens towards an open, progressive, stable society. We convince ourselves of this fact by researching the example of countries such as Poland, Ukraine, the Baltic States, etc., which throughout the last decades have pursued an oriented memorial policy. And in the Republic of Moldova, society would urgently need concrete actions in this regard. During the three decades that have passed since the fall of the communist regime, a large part of the population has not significantly changed its mentality, affected by the propaganda of the former empire. Historians point to the existence of the homo sovieticus phenomenon, people who are left with nostalgia for the old system, while at the same time sympathizing with their neighbor from the east. This fact proves that there is a need for a historical policy, which would consist of concrete actions, oriented towards the discovery of that past that remained unutilized. In a word, a consistent historical policy is needed, to bring back people’s memory, their own identity.
