Background. Antibiotic resistance is a major threatening to global public health with a major impact on mortality and morbidity, and the general population plays a significant role in the fight against antimicrobial resistance. Abuse of antibiotics is one of the main causes of antibiotic resistance. The pediatric population is very involved in this problem due to the large number of prescriptions of these drugs. Objectives. This study aims to assess the general knowledge about the use of antibiotics, as well as the attitudes related to their administration to children, among the parents of young children. Methods. In December 2020, within the National project “The impact of immunization on the morbidity and mortality of children with respiratory diseases in the Republic of Moldova.” a cross-sectional study was initiated among the parents of children aged between 8 weeks and 5 years. A questionnaire consisting of 49 items was administered to parents hospitalized within the PHI Mother and Child Institute and PHI Municipal Children’s Clinical Hospital No. 1 in Chisinau. Statistical analysis was performed using Excel. Results. Doctors have been identified as the main source of information on the correct use of antibiotics. About 32% of respondents said that antibiotics are useful for viral infections, 18% - that antibiotics should be given to all children with fever, and 44 percent of parents said they would like their doctor to prescribe antibiotics if that their child is suffering from a respiratory infection. Conclusion. This study identified major misconceptions regarding the use of antibiotics in the treatment of respiratory infections in young children, which necessitates the development of effective interventions to provide practical and appropriate advice to change behavior and attitudes among the general population and especially parents with young children. |
