The human rights situation in the Transnistrian region of the Republic of Moldova remains one of the major challenges to democratic security. This region is closed and inaccessible to real human rights monitoring institutions or missions. As a result, the people on the left bank of the Dniester lack effective mechanisms to protect their rights, in particular: the right to liberty and security, the right not to be subjected to torture and ill-treatment, freedom of expression and association, freedom of movement, education, the right to property, etc. Although, there is no more war on the Dniester, the Transnistrian region is still a major factor of tension both at international level (for sovereignty and territorial integrity), and at European level (for the neighborhood of the European Union), which in the context of eastward expansion, the western border of the Republic Moldova has become the eastern border of the community space. Despite the fact that the European Union has generated, through enlargement, stability and security in the European arena, its neighborhood has remained relatively unstable over time, whether we refer to the eastern or the southern neighborhood. The success of Brussels' actions and measures in this regard has varied according to the specifics of each region. |
