Rezumat | ||||||
The positive effects of humour are universally acknowledged whereas irony is regarded as rather malicious and disparaging. However, some theories of humour can be applied to irony and self-disparagement as long as contrasting and taboo elements are concerned. The effects they produce goes beyond the bitterness of (self)derision and heightens the sense of amusement due to verbal/situational incongruity and the relief experienced by the ironist and his audience when mocking usually undisclosed issues. To strengthen the idea that self-irony can reflect elements from both Incongruity and Relief theories, this paper offers some qualitative analysis of self-ironic from the novel Bridget Jones’s Diary. It is assumed that the research findings will confirm the premise that self-irony is more than a mere disparagement of one’s weaknesses and imperfections. |
