Children develop emotional intelligence in the first years of life, and emotional intelligence has been associated with school achievements. However, nowadays, children seem to have a low level of emotional development. This deficiency can affect not only their school development but also their personal relationships. Literature has the potential to encourage emotional intelligence by providing diverse emotional experiences that model empathy and help the child understand human behavior. Novels and stories are full of emotions. The characters experience the ups and downs of the human condition, often dramatically, and as we read, feel and learn about the characters and ourselves. For these reasons, literature offers a social-emotional learning gateway in the classroom. |
