The predictions of the future, announced by hermits, monks or church hierarchs, possessed both political and spiritual significances, in the medieval society. The Christian monk assumed the mission of the Pagan oracle to announce the next sovereigns or the end of military campaigns etc., as well as the authority of the biblical prophet who could make remonstrations to the sovereign. The aim of the present study is to draw out the typology and significances of the monkish predictions, according to the sources from the Romanian Principalities, as well as their continuity in the Romanian medieval society. |
