Primary sources in Romanian and former Soviet Union archives outline that the easement of the polemics on important moments in the Romanian-Soviet shared history, particularly on the issue of Bessarabia, that followed the bilateral meeting in Bucharest in October 1978, was only temporary, as it continued on different degrees until 1989. After 1980 a certain alleviation of the polemics occurred, followed by a careful monitoring by the Romanian side of monographs, volumes, studies, history handbooks, articles and declarations published in the Soviet Union related to the sensitive shared history issues: May 1812, January – March 1918; Romanian interwar politics; June 1940; Romania’s participation in the war against the Soviet Union.
