Rezumat

The synonyms are words which differ in shape, but are identical or close in meaning, which express the same meaning on a synchronic plane and within the same system, being substitutable in the same context, without the meaning of the context being altered. Synonyms are active elements of a   language, they increase its potential of expression, its capacity of clarification and the exactness of the meaning. Synonymy is nothing more than the possibility of substituting some words with others in a limited number of contexts, having the capacity of identifying the object the replaceable words refer to. Synonymy includes not only words, but also expressions and phrases such as ”to meet your maker – to die”, “to bring back to memory – to remember”. The more and more intense circulation of our classical literature, the dissemination of scientific books and translations, manuals, as well as theatre contributed to the continuous dissemination of neologisms, to increasing synonymy. The presence of synonyms in the lexical system is a positive phenomenon, since it makes the possibility of most accurately expressing various and ever changing facets of the world available to the speaker.
