Due to the recent events in Crimea, the frozen conflicts in the Caucasus have become an undeniable barometer of Russia`s policy in the former Soviet space. Among scholars heated debate has developed concerning concepts such as soft power, hard power or neo-imperialism. This paper considers the frozen conflicts in the Caucasus in order to stress the interdependence between Russia`s power mechanism and the post-Soviet, ethno-territorial disputes in the region. While analysing Russia`s approaches to the concept of soft power, the linkage between the latter and the legacy of the former empire will be discussed. I argue that in persuing its national interest, based on the Soviet legacy, Russia`s power mechanism and frozen conflicts in the Caucasus grow politically interdependent. Finally, as most analysts stress the lack of Moscow`s ideology related to its soft power particularly, I argue that Russia`s power in the post-Soviet conflict areas adapts itself to local particularities. |
