Rezumat

Trust in banks is considered as an important determinant of the effectiveness of the financial system, but little is known about what determines this trust. This article is devoted to the analysis of the dynamics of trust in banks in different countries, as well as the influence of socio-demographic factors. Based on data from the World Values Survey covering 60 countries for the period 2010–2014. and 46 countries for the period 2017-2020, there were cross-country differences in confidence in banks. It is noted that confidence in banks is lower in countries emerging from the financial crisis and in countries with higher per capita incomes. The results of our analysis shows that socio-demographic indicators do not significantly affect trust in banks at the individual level and differ across countries. Women trust banks more than men, and trust in banks tends to increase with income and decline with age and education. Our study has certain methodological limitations associated with the dataset. At first, we only have data for two rounds; secondly, the results can be influenced by the survey period, and the surveys are conducted at different intervals within separate rounds, so they cannot reflect the dynamics of trust in banks. Thirdly, even if the sample of countries includes developed and developing countries, it is not exhaustive. Fourthly, since we are using survey data, we can only rely on one question about trust in banks. Therefore, it is not possible to verify the validity of the results using alternative questions about trust in banks.
