The regime established in Romania after 1948 caused a number of changes with negative consequences in all fields of activity. With a communist regime in power, under the occupation of the Red Army and subordinated to the Soviet authorities, the political, social, economic and, not least, cultural changes brought about had nothing but negative effects on Romanian society. The interest of the Romanian Communist Regime in developing the cultural sector was merely a way to impose its own ideological beliefs. In addition to the cultural institutions involved in the propaganda activity, museums were also involved in the tasks that were imposed. The involvement of the Communists in the work of museums and the strengthening of the process of sovietization of the country only had a negative impact on the history of the Romanian people. Nothing could be exhibited in the halls of the museums without strict supervision from the so-called specialists of the Romanian Communist Party and only on the recommendation thereof. Museums were supposed to promote socialist construction and promote communist ideas. It had to be shown that the disadvantaged social strata had rebelled against the bourgeoisie, and that the Romanian communists were the only and most democratic force capable of understanding the needs of the common man. The cultural institutions were gradually turned into instruments for spreading communist ideology and propaganda, and the museum differed from the others in that here they were able to manage historical information by distorting it in accordance with their interests and with the visiting public. The article is a generalized study of the activities of the museums of Buzău and Ploiești and the other museums in the country in the light of the interests of the Romanian Communist Regime in relation to these cultural institutions. |
