Background. In children with cleft lip and palate, both surgical treatment and rehabilitation of functional occlusion during temporary and mixed dentition are often unsuccessful in the maxillofacial region during adolescence. Surface electromyography is a method of choice in assessing pathological muscle contractions on masticatory muscles. The purpose of the study. To assess imbalance and restore neurophysiological activity of masseter and temporalis muscles during mixed dentition in children with cleft lip and palate. Material and methods. The study included 10 patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate during mixed dentition. Surface electromyography of the masseter and temporal muscles was performed on all participants. The bioelectric activity through the surface electrodes of the affected and non-affected part was determined during the initial period and maximum voluntary contraction by application of cotton rolls. Results. All children in the study had transverse, sagittal, and frontal occlusion disorders. The results of the neuro-physiological study showed that in children with cleft lip and palate in the affected part the activity of contraction of the temporalis muscle is statistically significantly higher in the initial period (relaxation) compared to the activity of the masseter muscle which was found to be statistically significantly reduced (p < 0.05) in maximum voluntary contraction compared (p<0.05) to the non-affected part. Conclusions. In patients with congenital malformations of the maxillofacial region, electromyography with surface electrodes can be used as an additional method of diagnosis and monitoring of functional occlusion, thus expanding our knowledge about the anatomy, physiology and pathology of the stomatognathic system. |
