It is well known that environmental factors such as temperature, light, rainfall etc, affect plant secondary metabolites. Pigments belonging to the classes of betalains are one of the components of secondary metabolites determined in pokeweed. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the content of betalain components of secondary metabolites in pokeweed berries grown under different conditions. P. americana seeds were collected from both the Republic of Moldova and the Slovak Republic. Seeds were sown in two different areas: a) in natural conditions without irrigation; and b) in a solarium with drip irrigation and without temperature regulation. The content of betalains, including betacyanin, was determined using UV-visible spectrophotometry at 520 nm. The results showed that the berries harvested from plants grown in natural conditions contain 1.25 times more the betacyanins than berries from the solarium. Moreover, berries from natural conditions had more soluble dry matter (20.0%) compared to berries from the solarium (15.2%). It was noted that the accumulation of secondary metabolites in pokeweed berries was more influenced by the growing conditions than the origin of the seeds. The Visegrad Fund supports this study with grant no.52210146. |
