Rezumat

To a contemporary researcher, Central and Eastern Europe is a multicultural space affected by the tragic history of the past centuries. Its ethnicities, which came here at different times and due to numerous migrations, have created here a rich mosaic of cultures and a peculiar world of symbols on which different common ideas, national and religious identities, as well as collective and cultural memory concentrate. It is safe to say that these symbols form networks of meanings that we can decipher in different contexts – the resulting clues lead to various macro- or microscopic stories making up the memory of the past events of local communities from a modern perspective. The paper will present the initiatives embarked upon by major organizations for the documentation, reconstruction, and protection of cultural heritage resources in the world. It will also discuss new ideas and transformations observed in the new areas of heritage that are given meaning (heritage of local and regional cultures), museum spaces (new museums, new themes, and new stakeholders), and in the interpretations and negotiations regarding heritage.
