At the beginning of a section in Orthodox dogmatic theology studies, Dumitru Stăniloae invokes a well known Cartesian sentence: „cogito, ergo sum”. After several considerations, he reminds us of the saying of Patriarch Callistus of Constantinople, from the 15th century: „amo, ergo sum”. He further argues that both statements, even though they are under quite different intentionalities, reveal to us man as a person, as a being in communion with the others. Thus, as he points out in another context, it would be more appropriate to say: „I am, therefore we are”. I do not think that it is easy to come across such an interpretative approach in regard that Cartesian statement, just as unexpected at first site and as comprehensive and elevated. |
