The parallel soil researches, carried out in a fi eld of arable land sown with alfalfa during a fi ve years period and, on a strip of land left fallow for 15 years (experimental fi elds of the Research Institute of Field Crops „Selectia”) revealed, that the only factor that leads to restoring the quality of chernozems is that which led to the formation of these kind of soils, i.e. the steppe vegetation dominated by grasses with highly developed fasciculate root system. Alfalfa with swivel root system during a 5 years period poorly contributed to address the characteristics of degraded soils. Following the fact that in the Republic of Moldova there is no possibility to restore the soil quality status by leaving the land fallow (0.4 hectares of arable land per capita), it was investigated the possibility of remedying the chernozems characteristics without interrupting the agricultural production cycle, by using a mix of leguminous perennial grasses and crops (alfalfa + ryegrass), the crop production to be used as fodder. It was established that this procedure, used during a 5 years period, resulted in positive changes in the quality condition of the degraded arable layer of cambicchernozems. As result, the humus content increased, the status of physical condition of arable layer being improved as well. |
