Background. Lateral sinus lift is often indicated to patients with severe atrophy of the posterior region of the maxilla. The use of piezo-surgical instruments in sinus floor elevation techniques provided the possibility to perform individual osteotomies for bone reconstruction. Objective of the study. Evaluation of the effectiveness of the lateral sinus lift technique in patients with insufficient bone volume in the posterior region of the maxilla by using piezo-surgical instruments. Material and Methods. Patients with insufficient bone volume (<5mm) for implant insertion were involved in the descriptive study. Osteotomy and sinus membrane elevation were performed using piezo-surgical instruments. Was taken in consideration: the accidence of membrane perforation, the duration of the procedure, postoperative pain, edema, patient's experience before and after the intervention. Results. The use of piezo-surgical instruments during intervention (lateral sinus lift), proved a mini-invasive access in the preparation of hard tissues with a lower risk of perforation of the Schneider membrane. The frequency of accidental bone damage was minimal. The slightly longer time required if the piezo-surgery device was used for cutting large or extensive bone volumes, which was acceptable by taking into account the general advantages of precise cutting. On average, patients rated pain and edema as low. Daily life activities and experience about the operation were not affected by the surgical technique. Conclusion. The use of piezo-surgical instruments in the techniques of elevating the maxillary sinus significantly reduced the risk of perforation of the membrane, as well as increased the accuracy of osteotomy. |
