Rezumat | ||||||
This study aims to present the way in which the Bessarabian problem was reflected in the US diplomatic documents of the 1920s. First of all, we will try to reassess the American position towards the Bessarabian problem as a phenomenon of international politics: we sought to identify the American opinion regarding the evolution of this issue, especially in connection with the complicated RomanianSoviet relations, but also in the context of the Romanian- French, RomanianItalian, and Romanian-Polish relations. We will see that American diplomats were well informed about the evolution of this international dispute and also about that of the Romanian-Soviet talks concerning it. At the same time, and starting from the explanation of a doctrinal document - the Colby Note (which defined the US policy towards Soviet Russia until 1933), we will show how the attitude formulated in that document also influenced the American policy towards Bessarabia.
