Rezumat

To study the influence of viral phytopathogens and abiotic factors on the response of the male tomato gametophyte. Experiments were carried out on 8 hybrid combinations F1 of tomato and their parental forms. Plants were mechanically inoculated with tobacco mosaic virus or tomato aspermy virus at the phase of 4-5 leaves. To determine the thermal stability of pollen or its drought resistance, a part of the pollen grains was heated in a thermostat at the temperature of 40°C for 3 hours (experiment), other part of pollen was cultivated under conditions of water deficit. Pollen collected from healthy plants grown at the optimum temperature served as a control. The viability of the pollen and the length of the pollen tubes were assessed, and the ratio of these parameters was calculated. The results were statistically processed using Statgraphics Plus 5.0 software. The influence of viruses or their associated action with abiotic factors caused different changes in the functional characteristics of the male gametophyte, which manifested stimulation, inhibition, or neutral reaction. More than half of the variability of pollen viability in infected plants was determined by the genotype; the effect of viruses was twice as little. The genotype was also the main source of variance in the viability of pollen and pollen tubes length in infected plants under conditions of water deficit. The share of genotype influence was 54.0 ... 64.0%. In the case of the associated action of viruses and temperature, the variability of pollen viability was in a greater degree determined by the temperature factor, being 69.3 ... 69.7%. Assessment of the coefficients of heritability of the ratio of the analyzed traits (experiment / control) revealed positive dominance and overdominance in 46.0 ... 70.0% of cases. Genotypes that combine high values of pollen traits in viral diseases and in stressful background have been identified. These genotypes have the prospect of further use in breeding and genetic researches. The results of the male gametophyte responses to abiotic and biotic factors make it possible to characterize the resistance of the genotypes to these stress factors and can be used as a screening tool in the selection of valuable genotypes.
