Along with official, institutionally formalised names (used in church, civil registers, family, school, everyday life and so on), the Internet virtual environment has been hosting for several decades now a new type of name – the nickname (ID, nick, code name) –, which creates a distinct species/category of “netizens”. This virtual name encompasses the most important features of hypertext: nonlinearity – which is yet to reach its heyday; creativity and language expressiveness in the designation of users; virtuality (as the phenomenon and space in which it occurs and is authenticated); citationality (such a name can be cited); fragmentation (the new name is selected by the owner himself/herself); variation (it may vary depending on the context); partaking in Internet dialogism; indicating the interactivity of this type of communication; distinguishing an author’s depersonalisation, who is cast into a kind of anonymity and whose identity is transformed into a duplicitous or multiplicitous one, also on the linguistic level; offering openness, freedom and temporal and spatial independence; involvement in the game of signifiers; refusal of hierarchies (all nicknames have the same status); reflecting the democracy of communicative relations. |
