Background. The paranasal sinuses are variable in size and shape. Knowledge of the morphology of the maxillary sinus is crucial for surgery planning. The frequency of pathologies in the maxillary sinus increased in the last decades pecause of increased air pollution, exposure to pathogens and allergens. Objective of the study. To measure the length, width and height of the maxillary sinus in pacients of different ages and genders from Turkey. Material and Methods. The study analyzed 30 catscans of patients of different ages and genders in Turkey. A synthesis on other researches was made, the results of which were compared. The length, width and height of the sinuses were measured. Three age groups were formed: 18-34, 3-49, 50+ to analyse the age-dependent variability. Results. The average length of the sinus is ~36.5mm in males, ~34mm in females. The left sinus is longer by ~1.6mm. The average width of the sinus is~27.3mm in males,~25.4mm in females. The right sinus is wider in males by ~1.8mm. The left sinus is wider in females by ~2.4mm. The average height of the sinus is ~35mm in males, ~30.7mm in females. The left sinus is higher in both genders by ~3.3mm. The smallest parameters are noticed at patients in the first age group. It increases by ~8% in the second age group, and by ~3.6% in the third one. Conclusion. A difference between genders, age groups, the sizes of the left and right sinuses were found. The sinus is larger in men because of of the larger skull and is increasing with age because of the involution of the mucous membrane and thinning of the inferior wall which happens due to loss of teeth. |
