Background. Multimorbidity is present in 98% of the elderly population. The treatment of polypathologies induces polypragmatism - 27.0% to 59.0% in community-dwelling older adults and 38.1% to 91.2% in institutionalized individuals. Polypharmacy is associated with high hospitalizations, disability and mortality Objective of the study. Evaluation of the widespread of multimorbidity and polypragmatism of elderly patients in the geriatric ward. Material and Methods. The retrospective study included 679 electronic files for 2018 of patients admitted to the geriatric ward. Multimorbidity was estimated in the presence of more than 2 patient’s chronic diseases. Polypragmatism was established in the presence of more than 10 preparations administered to the patients’ treatment. The variables were expressed as number or percentage and arithmetic mean. Results. The average age of 79.0 years old pacients was 37.12% men and 62.88% women. Multimorbidity was established in 99.56% of cases, respectively, polypharmacy was in 51.54% of cases. The most common pathologies were: cardiovascular (37.53%), neurological (36.57%), osteoarticular (11.24%), endocrine (5.25%), gastrointestinal (4.74%), renal (3.09%), respiratory (1.58%). Conclusion. The problem of multimorbidity and polypragmatism of elderly patients is of great complexity, requires a multidimensional management for early diagnosis and optimization of measures to prevent drastic medical-psycho-social consequences. |
