Rezumat

The European citizenship is established by the European law, but it is closely related to the national citizenship. As the national citizenship grants rights to citizens, the European citizenship which completes it, expands citizens’ rights on the community’s territory. The Treaty for the European Union introduces four ways to protect the European citizenship, referring to an Europe of citizens, rights that have been also stressed by the Constitutional Treaty. The essential rights also refer to free circulation, the right to travel and to settle down, the right to work and study in all the states that are members, the right to vote and the right to stand for political positions, the right to write petitions towards the European Parliament and to address the Mediator, the right for diplomatic protection on the territory of a third state.
