The Balkan Peninsula or the Balkans is the historical and geographical name given to Southeast Europe. This area includes the following states: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Northern Macedonia, Greece, Kosovo, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Turkey and Hungary. With the fall of the communist regimes in the Soviet Union, Eastern Europe and the Balkans, the Balkan Peninsula aroused much interest, mainly due to armed conflicts in the former Yugoslavia. The reasons for the outbreak of these wars are largely the same: the differences between the different ethnic groups that populate this area. The roots of these conflicts appear since the dismemberment of the Ottoman Empire, the influence and expansion of Western forces has risen sharply. |
