Acidic treatment to introduce acidic functional groups onto the surface<br />of activated carbon was the most studied technique, due to its simplicity, availability of oxidizing<br />agents and the established nature of this technique.<br />In the present research, hydrochloric acid treatment was applied on activated carbon<br />prepared from nut shells and the adsorption capacity of the chemically modified activated carbon<br />was evaluated. The adsorption capacity of the modified activated carbon (CAN-Cl) on nitrite and<br />nitrate ions was compared with the untreated activated carbon (CAN).<br />Physical-chemical characteristics of the studied active carbons have been evaluated by<br />using nitrogen adsorption isotherms, thermogravimetric analysis and FTIR spectral analysis.<br />Batch equilibrium tests were carried out on both the untreated activated carbon prepared<br />from nut shells and also the hydrochloric acid treated activated carbon, to compare their<br />adsorption capacity on nitrite and nitrate ions.<br />Adsorption equilibrium data were fitted to Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The<br />equilibrium data for both the untreated nut shells-based activated carbon and the chloride ionstreated<br />activated carbon were best represented by the Langmuir isotherm.<br />The surface modification of the nut shells -based activated carbon using hydrochloric acid<br />has increased its adsorption capacity on nitrite ions from 0.05 to 2.50 mg/g (by about 50 times)<br />and nitrate ions from 0.22 to 4.30 mg/g (by about 20 times).</p></cfAbstr> <cfResPubl_Class> <cfClassId>eda2d9e9-34c5-11e1-b86c-0800200c9a66</cfClassId> <cfClassSchemeId>759af938-34ae-11e1-b86c-0800200c9a66</cfClassSchemeId> <cfStartDate>2014T24:00:00</cfStartDate> </cfResPubl_Class> <cfResPubl_Class> <cfClassId>e601872f-4b7e-4d88-929f-7df027b226c9</cfClassId> <cfClassSchemeId>40e90e2f-446d-460a-98e5-5dce57550c48</cfClassSchemeId> <cfStartDate>2014T24:00:00</cfStartDate> </cfResPubl_Class> <cfPers_ResPubl> <cfPersId>ibn-person-12153</cfPersId> <cfClassId>49815870-1cfe-11e1-8bc2-0800200c9a66</cfClassId> <cfClassSchemeId>b7135ad0-1d00-11e1-8bc2-0800200c9a66</cfClassSchemeId> <cfStartDate>2014T24:00:00</cfStartDate> </cfPers_ResPubl> <cfPers_ResPubl> <cfPersId>ibn-person-12209</cfPersId> <cfClassId>49815870-1cfe-11e1-8bc2-0800200c9a66</cfClassId> <cfClassSchemeId>b7135ad0-1d00-11e1-8bc2-0800200c9a66</cfClassSchemeId> <cfStartDate>2014T24:00:00</cfStartDate> </cfPers_ResPubl> <cfPers_ResPubl> <cfPersId>ibn-person-12328</cfPersId> <cfClassId>49815870-1cfe-11e1-8bc2-0800200c9a66</cfClassId> <cfClassSchemeId>b7135ad0-1d00-11e1-8bc2-0800200c9a66</cfClassSchemeId> <cfStartDate>2014T24:00:00</cfStartDate> </cfPers_ResPubl> <cfPers_ResPubl> <cfPersId>ibn-person-679</cfPersId> <cfClassId>49815870-1cfe-11e1-8bc2-0800200c9a66</cfClassId> <cfClassSchemeId>b7135ad0-1d00-11e1-8bc2-0800200c9a66</cfClassSchemeId> <cfStartDate>2014T24:00:00</cfStartDate> </cfPers_ResPubl> <cfPers_ResPubl> <cfPersId>ibn-person-559</cfPersId> <cfClassId>49815870-1cfe-11e1-8bc2-0800200c9a66</cfClassId> <cfClassSchemeId>b7135ad0-1d00-11e1-8bc2-0800200c9a66</cfClassSchemeId> <cfStartDate>2014T24:00:00</cfStartDate> </cfPers_ResPubl> </cfResPubl> <cfPers> <cfPersId>ibn-Pers-12153</cfPersId> <cfPersName_Pers> <cfPersNameId>ibn-PersName-12153-3</cfPersNameId> <cfClassId>55f90543-d631-42eb-8d47-d8d9266cbb26</cfClassId> <cfClassSchemeId>7375609d-cfa6-45ce-a803-75de69abe21f</cfClassSchemeId> <cfStartDate>2014T24:00:00</cfStartDate> </cfPersName_Pers> </cfPers> <cfPers> <cfPersId>ibn-Pers-12209</cfPersId> <cfPersName_Pers> <cfPersNameId>ibn-PersName-12209-3</cfPersNameId> <cfClassId>55f90543-d631-42eb-8d47-d8d9266cbb26</cfClassId> <cfClassSchemeId>7375609d-cfa6-45ce-a803-75de69abe21f</cfClassSchemeId> <cfStartDate>2014T24:00:00</cfStartDate> </cfPersName_Pers> </cfPers> <cfPers> <cfPersId>ibn-Pers-12328</cfPersId> <cfPersName_Pers> <cfPersNameId>ibn-PersName-12328-3</cfPersNameId> <cfClassId>55f90543-d631-42eb-8d47-d8d9266cbb26</cfClassId> <cfClassSchemeId>7375609d-cfa6-45ce-a803-75de69abe21f</cfClassSchemeId> <cfStartDate>2014T24:00:00</cfStartDate> </cfPersName_Pers> </cfPers> <cfPers> <cfPersId>ibn-Pers-679</cfPersId> <cfPersName_Pers> <cfPersNameId>ibn-PersName-679-3</cfPersNameId> <cfClassId>55f90543-d631-42eb-8d47-d8d9266cbb26</cfClassId> <cfClassSchemeId>7375609d-cfa6-45ce-a803-75de69abe21f</cfClassSchemeId> <cfStartDate>2014T24:00:00</cfStartDate> <cfFamilyNames>Lupascu</cfFamilyNames> <cfFirstNames>Tudor</cfFirstNames> </cfPersName_Pers> </cfPers> <cfPers> <cfPersId>ibn-Pers-559</cfPersId> <cfPersName_Pers> <cfPersNameId>ibn-PersName-559-3</cfPersNameId> <cfClassId>55f90543-d631-42eb-8d47-d8d9266cbb26</cfClassId> <cfClassSchemeId>7375609d-cfa6-45ce-a803-75de69abe21f</cfClassSchemeId> <cfStartDate>2014T24:00:00</cfStartDate> </cfPersName_Pers> </cfPers> </CERIF>
