Excavations of the tumulus 1 near Kongaz Village in 1974. The present paper reports results of excavations carried out in 1974 of a tumulus Nr. 1 near Congaz village (Komrat District, the Republic of Moldova) that takes part from a tumulus complex situated in the watershed plateau between Ialpug and Ialpugel rivers in the Budjak steppe. The height of tumulus amounts to 5.5 m, while its diameter is of 55m.The early mounds of the tumulus 1 belong to an advanced and late variant of the PittGrave Culture. Human remains are bent over on their back and colored with ocher. The inlet burials belong Mnogovalikovaya Culture dated back to the middle of II millennium B. C. The burials has yielded pottery and bone artifacts typical of the recorded cultures. The latest burial (the burial Nr. 3,5) from the tumulus belongs to the Sarmatian Culture. The tumulus 1 Kongaz acted as a burial construction for a long time period ranging from the middle of III millennium B.C. to I-II century A.C. |
