During the communist period, institutionalizing all children diagnosed with autism was considered the most correct way of caring for and possibly educating them, as they were considered to need an environment adapted to special requirements. According to these laws, children were divided into recoverable, partially-recoverable and irrecoverable. The category of children considered recoverable received the first orientation to schools for the handicapped or autistic, and those with mild mental impairment to auxiliary schools. After completing secondary school, children were enrolled in special vocational schools in search of a professional qualification. Children considered as partially recoverable were admitted to boarding schools and carried out elementary school education. Children considered irretrievable, i.e. practically diagnosed with severe mental handicap or associated deficiencies, were hospitalized in hospital-dormitories, where they receive only care, staff from these institutions who have medical training. Nowadays, things have changed. Children with autism ended up being integrated in mainstream schools, so we also find them in inclusive schools, not only in special schools. Also, therapy is a real solution for these children and we should refer not only to cognitive-behavioral therapy or ABA but also to occupational therapy, which can be very helpful. |
