In the second half of the twentieth century, young composers experimented with various
compositional methods and systems. Their music reflects the transformations of the century.
It is marked by various currents and renewals of musical language. France is represented
by Claude Debussy, a prominent composer of Impressionism, and Neoclassicism has Erich Satie as its
mentor, followed by Darius Milhaud, Francois Poulenc, etc. Pietro Mascagni, Ruggero Leoncavallo,
Giacomo Puccini and others are active in Italy, and Germany has Paul Hindemith, Carl Orff, etc. as
representatives. Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly are notable Hungarian composers, contemporary
with the Spanish Manuel de Falla or the English Gustav Holst, Edward Elgar and the list could go on.
They and many others have renewed the modern musical language, creating true musical
masterpieces.
