Walser’s short story titled Ibsen’s Nora, or Fried Potatoes implements laughter harmonization of the concept “Ibsen’s Nora” formed by the play A Doll’s House. The basic mythologem of both texts includes two motifs: the miraculous “totemic” wife whom the protagonist loses and regains by act of courage; an out-of-ethical prohibition which must be broken. R. Walser uses myth of laughter to postulate that meanness is merely a sort of negative clothes, which a person is free to take off using the laughter courage, while existence is inseparable from everyone’s essence. The deed of Walser’s Helmer (his carnival-like request for fried potatoes) “cancels” the image of the evil Universe where everyone is guilty of something and a guilty person is a “nullity”, which weighed heavily upon Ibsen. Walser generates a laughter model of the Universe, where there are no guilt and meanness at all, and the individual essence of every human being is saved; de facto, it is a paradise-like model of the Universe. |
