Following Fillmore’s A Case for Case thesis, the present paper describes what thematic grid is and presents researchers’ different approaches of how a thematic grid must be ranked. The notion of aspectual hierarchy and the relevance that it has for the argument structure of the verb are also considered. Through the aspectual hierarchy, we also explain how verb-based compound words are formed. Furthermore we analyze the relation between theta grid and subcategorization features based on Chomsky’s theta criterion, emphasizing the importance of the subcategorization rules. Subsequently, we approach the Projection Principle theory, which confirms that the lexical information from the Lexicon is essential for the functioning of syntax, as well as for semantic interpretation. |
