Până în prezent, abordările teoretice contradictorii din literatura de specialitate, împreună cu lipsa rezultatelor empirice, au lăsat această relație nedeterminată. Acest studiu intenționează să umple această lacună evaluând măsura în care digitizarea afectează durabilitatea, luând în considerare în special protecția mediului natural, așa cum este propusă de Pactul Verde European. Informațiile digitale pot fi reprezentate universal, iar datele pot fi manipulate pe dispozitive digitale fără a fi degradate. Pe de altă parte, atunci când se lucrează cu informații non-digitale, există o limită a ceea ce se poate face din cauza diferitelor formate, cum ar fi hârtie sau bobina de film. Transformarea digitală este una dintre mega tendințele globale care duce la reforme structurale și organizaționale în sectoarele public și privat prin adoptarea tehnologiei informației.
