Students as well as teachers take the learning of the reading skill for granted. As a result, most first-year students, engineers-to-be, struggle with reading specialized texts or academic reading materials. This paper will discuss the importance of schema and of schema theory-based reading tasks in enhancing text comprehension. Therefore, background knowledge will be of primary importance for ESP readers, and schema-based pre- reading activities should be used for activating background knowledge and constructing new knowledge. |
