Moldova faces big challenges from soil and land degradation and climate change, especially in the south of the country. Agroforestry practices are effective remedies for soil degradation and have been implemented within the Support for Rehabilitation of Forest Protection component of the Moldova Agricultural Competitiveness Project. The network of 2.2 thousand ha of shelter belts in the south of the country has been rehabilitated, protecting a tract of 63 thousand ha. Additional carbon sequestration amounts to 7.9 tCO2eq/ha/year, a net carbon capture of 70,000 tCO2eq and, as a by-product, the Moldsilva Agency undertaking the works delivered 13,000 m3 of firewood to the local authorities. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2021.
