Rezumat

The death of Joseph Stalin in 1953 and the coming to power of Nikita Khrushchev were characterized by some changes in the soviet people’s lifestyle. The reformist activity of the authorities had a positive influence on society’s standard of living and moral environment, but the totalitarian system remained intact. The state directed almost all the efforts and funds towards the restoration of industrial capacity and military potential. Improvement of the living standards of the citizens was secondary on the priority list. There were a lot of problems: lack of premises for housing, hospitals, educational, medical, transportation services problems and another social and cultural needs, constant deficit of everyday goods and other elementary things and needs for people. All these created a lot of difficulties for people and accustomed them to existing realties: poor service culture, bad sanitary and hygienic living conditions, poor quality and constant shortage of everything. There was horse-driven transport, kerosene lamps, communal apartments, military apparel, manual labor at the enterprises in the soviet life of the 1950s. Rural people especially felt all these. The rural infrastructure was underdeveloped, there were no communal amenities, there was lack of employment prospects etc. So, during this period, the tendency of growth of the urban population and the decline of the rural one is observed. At the same time, a general social stabilization and rise in living standards of the citizens in comparison with the previous decade is observed. Many people got individual apartments, gasification, electrification, central heating, water supply, public transport and another services. Thus, the reformation policy of the authorities changed the living conditions of the Ukrainians for the better. The outlined trends are undoubtedly positive but they were implemented quite slowly, the level of well-being of the citizens remained insufficient, especially if compared with Western capitalist countries.
