For the last two decades, the internet has emerged and shaped our society. From a mere novelty, it’s proven to have become a force to be reckoned with, giving people a platform to express themselves, learn, make a living, and affect change on a scale and speed never before seen in the history of our civilization. And yet, for all the good it has allowed, the internet and cyber domain in general have also become arenas where the omnipresent crime, espionage and attacks have created a state of insecurity, one which ultimately allowed the narrative that the full freedom allowed by the internet, and the security needed by the people are somehow competing ideals. This narrative has created a longstanding cybersecurity debate where governments and businesses alike have flagrantly argued that in order to protect people online, their freedoms and agency have to be limited. In this article, we will discuss the ethical and psychological challenges that have to be tackled in order to develop a cybersecurity strategy centred on online human rights, and hopefully prove that security and the freedom entailed by general human rights are not only non-exclusive, but truly reliant on each other. |
