Rezumat

Hydrogen can become an important energy source in the future, considering the depletion of natural resources (gas, oil). The researchers should work on finding an affordable way for safe accumulation, handling and transport of this gas. A new attempt in this area can serve MOFs (Metal-Organic Frameworks) or coordination polymers that may have large storage areas and quite good hydrogen adsorption [1]. MOFs are materials that can remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere exhibiting enhanced as well as selective adsorption [2]. Three new coordination polymers were synthesized through hydrothermal method using 3d metal nitrates (Ni2+, Co2+, Zn2+), 4,4'-bis((1H-imidazol-1-yl)methyl)-1,1'-biphenyl (BIMB) ligand and two polycarboxylic acids: 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (2,6-H2PyDC) and 1,2,3-benzenetricarboxylic acid (1,2,3-H3BTC), respectively. The analyzes of the compounds (elemental, IR, X-ray) have shown their molecular compositions: [Ni(BIMB)1,5(2,6-PyDC)]n - 1D polymer, [Co3(BIMB)3(1,2,3-BTC)2]n and {[Zn3(BIMB)3(1,2,3-BTC)2] (H2O)}n - 2D polymers (see the scheme below): Thermogravimetric analysis of compounds was carried out in air up to 1000°C and sorption properties were tested by observing their behavior in nitrogen adsorption / desorption process at 77.3 K. The substances show a high thermal stability after solvent molecules removal remaining intact until 300 °C. Although the crystal structure packaging for the compounds show small cavities, the sorption properties are not very promising. Further investigation should be done for their practical applications.
