In the eve of the First World War, Bucovina had become a multiethnic and multiconfessional province where the Romanians represented slightly more than a third of the total population. operations, being three times partially occupied by the Russian army. Czarist
and Hapsburg empires’ collapse and unification of Bessarabia with Romania created favorable conditions for the assertion of Romanian national movement in Bukovina. On October 27, 1918 a meeting of the representatives of Romanians from Bukovina took place in Chernivtsi where was decided “the full union of Bukovina with other Romanian provinces within the borders of a unitary national state”. On November 28, 1918, the General Congress of Bukovina took place and decided the “unconditional and eternal union of Bukovina in its old borders till Ceremuş, Colacin and Dniester, with Romania”. After nearly a year of negotiations within the Paris Peace Conference
the union of Bukovina with Romania was officially recognized. |
