Existau procedee distincte de folosire a encausticii, procese depinzând în bună parte de scopul în care se executa pictura sau colorarea ( când encaustica este destinată să protejeze pereţii navelor). Encaustica: Procedeu tehnic antic în care pigmenţii sunt aglutinaţi cu ceară şi alte ingrediente (răşini, uleiuri, gume) materialul de bază fiind ceara punică, ceara asigurând culorilor calităţi neobişnuite.
