Rezumat

An electron-spin-resonance study of ferrimagnetic MnCr2S4 single crystals revealed a positive cubic magneto-crystalline anisotropy at temperatures below the Curie temperature TC (64.5 K). A large difference (∼2.5 kOe) was found between the resonance fields for the 〈001〉 and 〈111〉 axes at 4 K. The anisotropy constants reach a value of ∼105 erg/cm3, unexpectedly high for the octahedral Cr3+ and tetrahedral Mn2+ ions. Probably, the observed anisotropy in 'as grown' sample is not generated by Cr2+ ions due to anion vacancies. The presence of a sufficient amount of Fe2+ impurities to cause this anisotropy is ruled out.
