Feminism meant a social current, appeared at the beginning of the 19th century, marked by the legal spirit of the search for equal rights between women and men, but above all, the addition of women's rights and the eradication of some indisputable historical inequalities. The feminist movement in Romania followed the stages of European feminism, accessing new social values, in which women were included and recognized. The present paper proposes an analysis of Romanian feminism and its specific features, in a European context. In Romania, we can speak of an elite feminism, due to women with a high level of education and access to Western culture. The feminist movement in Romania was not a broad one, encompassing women from the entire national space. It was a predominantly urban movement, since at that time, Romanian society was largely agrarian, approximately 80% of the people lived in the countryside, and industrialization had reached a small part of the population. The movement was constituted as a response against the inferior normative status of women: the Civil Code of 1865 provided for the incapacity of women from a political, social and economic point of view, having a status similar to minors and people with mental disabilities. Outstanding personalities such as Maria Rosetti, Eleonora Stratilescu, Elena Maissner, Sofia Nădejde, Calypso C. Botez, Alexandrina Gr. Cantacuzino, Zoe Râmniceanu, Cornelia Emilian, Ella Negruzzi, Elena Odobescu, Ecaterina Cerchez et al. they summarized the demands of Romanian women and participated in the public debates regarding the drafting of the new Constitution of the country, in sending some memos to the parliament and politicians for the removal of the anachronistic legislation regarding the legal, economic and political status of women. |
