Background: Anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are one of the most widely used classes of drugs. Their use raises the issue of the high risk of chronic digestive complications. More than one third of patients are over 60 years. About 15% of elderly people are using NSAID chronically. Purpose: Highlighting digestive pathology associated with chronic use of NSAIDs. Material and methods: A retrospective study on 3020 patients with digestive symptoms, over a period of 3 years (1 Jan.2009-31 dec.2012) diagnosed on the basis of admission sheets and results of endoscopic investigations Results: 845 patients had recent history of consumption of NSAIDs. 254 of them were Helicobacter Pilory + (HP+), 78% were aged over 65 years, 63% were male, 14% had upper gastrointestinal bleeding, 129 had erosive antral gastritis, 151 had gastric ulcer, 191 had duodenal ulcer. NSAIDs most used was diclofenac (285 patients), and 74 patients with chronic administration of «cardiac use aspirin» had also associated digestive pathology. Conclusions: More than 1/3 of patients with chronic use of NSAIDs had a history of digestive disorders. Most of them were over 65 years. Most patients with NSAIDs and gastrointestinal pathology were those on diclofenac. HP infection increased the risk of gastric and duodenal ulcer, complicated with upper gastrointestinal bleeding. |
