Adolescence is a time of great emotional as well as psychological changes, emerging sexuality and important life choices regarding employment and education. During this transition period, adolescents and especially those with disabilities may be vulnerable in society. International development programs tend to focus on young students or adults, without paying particular attention to the needs and interests of adolescents. This can negatively affect opportunities for teenagers to develop their skills as well as to participate in community life. Key factors influencing personal development and socialization often include the attitude and behavior of parents, family members and colleagues, and traditional social or community values. The costs of exclusion are significant for both the individual and society. Children and adolescents with disabilities are at the heart of efforts to build inclusive societies, have the same rights as others, and can be agents of change and self-determination, not just beneficiaries. Moreover, excluded children and adolescents will become adults with less chances to work, with poorer health outcomes and who are more dependent on their families and government services. |
