The article deals with the main theoretical and ecological-practical aspects of the development of the consumer economy in Russia and in the world economic space as a whole. The main features of the consumer economy inherent in it in modern economic conditions are determined. A study of consumer spending of the population and the availability of durable goods in the households of the Russian Federation was conducted. Based on the study of consumption and the reasons for its excessive growth, the main characteristics of the consumption economy are identified and described. The author also highlights the most important problems of the functioning of the consumer economy, concerning the negative impact on the state of the environment, the population of the planet, the structure of the economy, etc. It is proved that finding ways to solve these problems will contribute to the effective development of the economy and ensure its ecological and economic security.
