Volunteers engaged in extended foreign posts experience significant stressors in adjusting to their new roles and environments. This paper regards volunteers who come from various parts of the United States and commit to two-year assignments in countries around the world for a particular organization. Although varying in age from early 20s to late 60s and beyond, these volunteers encounter a range of comparable symptoms in terms of adjustment that manifest over the course of that two-year volunteer cycle. Cultural factors specific to Moldova; factors resulting from a change in status to a full-time volunteer from some other full-time status; and systemic factors related to the volunteer organization itself have compound effects on the individual and collective volunteer psyche. These factors are exacerbated by the relative distance between volunteers and their families, friends, and familiar environments back in the United States. Volunteers may also witness or experience traumatic events in Moldova that may trigger underlying anxieties related to adjusting to their new roles. The author will expound upon patterns in mental health phenomena and resultant coping mechanisms observed in volunteers over the course of ten months as an in-country mental health counselor for one organization’s volunteers. |
