Rezumat

The opening ceremony of the German University in Cernauti was held on October 4, 1875. In the period 1875-1919, the University of Cernauti with German as teaching language, functioned with three faculties: Theology, Law and Philosophy. The first teaching staff of the University of Cernauti consisted of 28 persons, including 14 Germans, 10 Romanians (eight being at the Faculty of Theology) and 4 Ukrainians. At the University of Cernauti worked in total 127 full and part time professors (15 at Faculty of Theology, 44 – at Faculty of Law, and 68 – at the Faculty of Philosophy), of which 87 Germans, 20 Romanians, 12 Jews, five Ukrainians. Over the existence time of the Austrian University in Cernauti, there worked 44 rectors, including 22 Germans, 11 Romanians, 9 Jews, and two Ukrainians. The University of Cernauti played an important role in rising of the level of public education and culture of population of Bukovina.
