Rezumat

Decorations in the Bulgarian folk costume make up an indivisible artistic whole with the clothes themselves. They are organically connected with it and are an integral part of the overall structure of the costume. Many of the jewelry evolved from some elements of clothing related to their practical use. Gradually, people’s artistic needs, their feelings about beauty and harmony created works of art out of these utilitarian things and turned them into jewelry. Metal jewelry was used in many ceremonies and customs; they accompanied a person throughout his life – from birth to death. In the views of the Bulgarians, pieces of jewelry, especially metal ones, had magical protective power. The belief that they can protect their owner from the evil forces surrounding him and the evil eye is still preserved to some extent. This article is the first attempt to describe metal jewelry in folk costumes of the Bulgarians of Moldova. Such concepts as “pafty”, “chaprazi”, “hryvnia”, “intishiya”, “gerdan”, “altyn”, “leftovi”, “mahmudiya”, “sintsi”, etc. are revealed. This jewelry is an integral part of the traditional clothing complex not only of the Balkan peoples, but also of the entire Turkic world. It is significant that the terminology of the names of jewelry coincides in many respects. This testifies to the oldest roots of most of the archaic elements of the Bulgarian folk costume.
