Rezumat

St. Andrew’s Day (December 13), is presently observed by the majority of the Ukrainians of the Republic of Moldova, as well as by representatives of other ethnic groups, as a great Christian holiday in honor of St. Andrew the First-Called. In addition to attending church, it is customary to celebrate the name day of every man in the family with the name of Andrii. In the folk tradition, on this day, youth organize Андріївські вечорниці, the origins of which have deep pagan roots associated with the pre-Christian holiday of Kalita. According to the field materials we collected, rural youth met at the traditional Андріївські вечорниці almost until the mid-60s of the 20th century. The core of the local varieties of youth festivals are the following ritual actions: 1) baking ritual cakes – корж-Калита, symbolizing the sun, and fun with it: the cake decorated with ribbons was hung from the ceiling beam by girls and the young men were prevented from biting off a piece of it in every way; 2) a variety of girls’ fortunetelling: with the help of ritual bran cakes - балабушки, utensils, shoes etc.; 3) парубоцькі бешкети - youth tricks, most often this is the removal of gates from the houses of unmarried girls as a symbolic elimination of obstacles to marry a chosen one. The festival with cheerful dances, songs, jokes lasted all night. A pronounced local variant of the Андріївські вечорниці can be encountered in the village Musait, Taraclia district, where a scarecrow in the form of an anthropomorphic figure was made and buried with rural funeral traditions: dressed accordingly, he was placed in a coffin made of sunflower stems and escorted on the last journey with weeping and lamentations. The funeral procession moved through the entire village to the river, where the straw effigy was thrown. After that they organized a dance – джьок. At the present stage, the preservation of tradition is supported by ethnographic groups at rural and city clubs, houses of culture, ethnocultural organizations and educational institutions.
