At the Research Institute for Fruit Growing Pitesti – Maracineni, breeding studies were conducted to obtain plum cultivars to be used both for fresh marketing and processing (dehydrated or jelly) as well. The study was done of 260 genotypes. After the study only 15 genotypes was selected to be dehydrated, with high content in dry matter and mineral composition. For the dehydrated plums, the genotypes have a smaller pit, freestone, a low malic acid content and a high sugars content as well as over 15% dry weight. The plums minerals are benefic to our body because the phosphorous is involved in the glucides metabolism, K stimulates the process of certain enzymes and Ca is the major component for the bones. Vitamin C contained in plums is important for the cell respiration process having at the some time an antihemorrhagic, antioxidant and antiinfection action. |
