European studies represents a direction of research and an academic discipline often present in the curricula of university programs under the aegis of the domain entitled „International relations”. They represent a species of Area studies, situated in the same category as American studies, South American studies, African studies, Asian studies, and so on. By their very nature, Area studies involve inter-, trans- and multidisciplinarity, investigating geopolitical space with instruments of geography, history, linguistics, political sciences, international law, economics, cultural studies, security studies, and so on. In their turn, these sciences are characterized by strong interdisciplinary features. Thus, European studies far exceeded the limited perception of many scholars and university professors, limiting (to synonymous) European studies to the European integration process and its most advanced product - the European Union. |
