The cultural background has an important role in determining the source of help for mental problems. The patient sees his illness through the beliefs and values that characterize his society, therefore the source of help is determined according to the coping patterns that are used in that society (Cheung 1984 in Klingman 2004). In this context the Arab adolescent will chose a therapist from the same society or culture. The unique cultural values have a great influence on turning for help for the Arab adolescent. One of the basic terms for asking for help for the Arab adolescent is the recognition that there is a problem or a need that the individual can't handle by himself. In the Arab society the adolescent is asked to show composure and to be patient even in hard times (Dwairy 2002). Thus, if the Arab society expects the Arab adolescent to be “a man” and to show manly qualities, while asking for help is seen as a weakness and as damaging the Arab adolescent self-respect in front of his society. |
